Signs You Are Experiencing This Problem

  • Printer not found on network during setup
  • Wi-Fi connection drops after router change or password update
  • Printer shows connected on its screen but computer cannot find it
  • Printer gets a 169.254.x.x (APIPA) address instead of a real IP
  • WPS button pairing fails or times out

Common Causes

  • Router password changed and printer still has the old password stored internally
  • Printer and computer on different Wi-Fi bands (2.4GHz vs. 5GHz) — some printers only support 2.4GHz
  • Router firewall or client isolation setting blocking communication between devices on the same network
  • Wi-Fi channel congestion or interference causing unstable printer connection
  • Printer Wi-Fi credentials need to be re-entered after a router replacement or firmware update

What to Check First

  • Check what IP address the printer has. You can usually find this in the printer's Settings or Network menu. If it shows 169.254.x.x, the printer is not successfully connected to your router.
  • Verify your Wi-Fi password is correct. If you recently changed your router password, the printer will still have the old password and cannot connect.
  • Check your router settings for 'AP isolation' or 'Client isolation' — if enabled, devices on the same network cannot communicate with each other.
  • Make sure your router is broadcasting a 2.4GHz network. Many home printers, especially older HP and Canon models, only connect to 2.4GHz — not 5GHz.
  • If you recently replaced your router, the printer needs to be reconfigured with the new network name (SSID) and password — this is done from the printer control panel, not the computer.

If none of these steps resolve the problem, a Nanicto technician can connect remotely and check your printer configuration directly. We will diagnose the problem and determine whether it can be resolved remotely.
